New Quantum Computer Plugs Into a Wall Outlet — No Freezer Required
SAXON Q's diamond-based machines skip the deep-freeze cooling other quantum computers need, a change that could bring the technology out of physics labs and into regular office server rooms.
Most quantum computers need to be cooled to temperatures colder than outer
space just to work. A new company called SAXON Q says it has built ones
that don't. Its machines run at normal room temperature and plug into a
regular wall outlet.
Quantum computers are a type of computer that can solve certain hard
problems much faster than the computers we use every day. But they are
usually delicate. Most need giant refrigerators and sealed vacuum chambers
to work, which makes them expensive and hard to run outside a specialized
lab.
SAXON Q's computers work differently. Instead of the usual hardware, they
use small diamonds with tiny defects built into them on purpose. These
defects, called nitrogen-vacancy centers, can store and process quantum
information without needing extreme cold. The company is now selling two
models: one with 128 qubits and one with 512 qubits. A qubit is the basic
unit of information a quantum computer uses, similar to how a "bit" works
in a normal computer.
Both new machines are built to slide into a standard server rack, the kind
of equipment shelf already used in most data centers. They run on regular
power, not the special cooling and shielding systems other quantum
computers need. SAXON Q says its machines are also far more energy
efficient than the powerful graphics chips many companies currently use for
heavy computing tasks.
The company is aiming its computers at specific jobs: simulating chemical
reactions, researching new materials, and running certain types of
artificial intelligence models. These are areas where businesses have
wanted to try quantum computing but didn't want to build the costly
infrastructure it normally requires.
This launch follows an earlier demo in April, when SAXON Q showed off a
smaller, portable version of the same technology at a trade show in
Germany. Experts who study quantum computing say removing the need for deep
cooling is a major step toward making the technology practical for regular
businesses. They also caution that it's still unclear whether diamond-based
computers can grow powerful enough to beat today's best computers at
real-world tasks.
